Overview

OpenOps is an open source FinOps automation platform that helps engineering and FinOps teams optimize cloud costs, enforce governance, and automate operational workflows without writing custom tooling from scratch.

Built for multi-cloud environments and designed around reusable, ready-to-use workflows, OpenOps gives teams a scalable foundation for cloud cost management across AWS, GCP, and Azure.

As OpenOps expanded its Google Cloud workflow gallery, it partnered with Reclear to accelerate the development and documentation of a new suite of GCP-specific FinOps templates, bringing engineering depth and domain expertise to a fast-moving initiative.

The initiative

OpenOps's workflow gallery is a core part of the platform's value proposition.

Teams can adopt pre-built, battle-tested automation without starting from scratch. Expanding the GCP library meant building workflows that were not only technically accurate against real GCP behavior, but consistent, well-documented, and immediately adoptable by engineering and FinOps practitioners.

To move faster without compromising quality, OpenOps brought in Reclear as a specialist execution partner.

What we built together

We worked closely with OpenOps to design, refine, and document a suite of GCP FinOps workflows.

1Workflow development & iteration

We developed and iteratively refined ~30 GCP workflow templates covering:

  • Unused resource cleanup (e.g., disks, NAT gateways, buckets)
  • Cost optimization (e.g., VM rightsizing, lifecycle policies)
  • Governance and compliance: resource hygiene and policy enforcement checks

Each workflow was tested end-to-end, validated against real GCP behavior, and iteratively improved through collaboration.

2Ready-to-use logic

Special attention was given to:

  • Region-aware pricing models
  • Accurate Cloud Monitoring metrics usage
  • Edge case handling (e.g., missing metrics, unsupported configs)
  • Eliminating false-positive recommendations

3Documentation for adoption

Beyond building workflows, we ensured each template was supported with clear technical documentation, helping users:

  • Understand what the workflow does
  • Know when to use it
  • Safely execute or review recommendations

GCP workflow templates are organized and documented within the OpenOps workflow catalog:

"Reclear played a meaningful role in helping us build out our GCP workflow gallery. Their contributions helped us reach a strong library of ready-to-use templates we're genuinely proud of.

The result

The expanded GCP gallery gives OpenOps users a significantly stronger starting point for cloud cost management on Google Cloud.

Foundation for future automation

Teams can adopt, customize, and run workflows immediately, rather than build from scratch. The library is not just complete; it's practical.

Why this matters

FinOps automation only delivers value when teams actually adopt it. Workflows that are technically sound but poorly documented, or inconsistent in behavior, sit unused.

By combining engineering rigor with clear documentation, this initiative ensured the GCP library is not just complete, but practical. For teams managing cloud infrastructure at scale, that difference matters.
